Nury Turkel, a U.S.-based Uighur Rights advocate and attorney in Washington D.C., gave a touching speech at the 2019 Oslo Freedom Forum. Turkel, born himself in a prison camp in East Turkestan during the Cultural Revolution, spoke at the Forum about the horrific oppression carried out by China against the Uighur Muslims, “If you don’t stand up, this could happen to you”. Turkel has been advocating for the rights of the Uighur people. Nury Turkel serves as a prominent voice for the Uighur people by urging international action against the repression of the Uyghur people, such as international sanctions against Chinese government officials who actively participate in the abuse of human rights. Turkel is the former president of the Uyghur American Association (UAA) as well as the former executive director of the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), an organization that is committed to promoting human rights and democracy. Turkel holds a J.D. from American University Washington College of Law, and has been featured in various media outlets such as BBC, Financial Review, and PRI as well as foreign policy forums.
